CHAPTER 34 The seventh year was to be enjoyed as the land's Sabbath, even as the seventh day by each Israelite, who must avoid naming false gods, but keep the due feasts thrice a year to the true God, not offering blood with leavened bread, nor letting the fat remain till the morning A prohibition occurs of a peculiar kind, and is repeated not only in a later part of this book, but also in Deuteronomy: "Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk." He descended in the cloud Probably They are one in the same God. And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. In His love He is become a servant for ever; and He loves to be so. _ 1. Coming from within that light inaccessible, the only-begotten Son from the bosom of the Father declared what was thereviz., love. We have what answers to it. That is clarified a little bit more in the commandments that God gave, for it there adds, "to those that continue in them. But it is a strange plea he urges: For it is a stiff-necked people. What follows, that God keeps mercy to a thousand generations, we have expounded in chapter 20; whilst, on the other hand, the punishments which He requires for mens sins are only extended to the third and fourth generation, because His clemency surpasses His judgment, as is said in Psalms 30:5, (379) There is only a moment in his anger, but life in his favor; and although this only relates properly to believers, yet it flows from a general principle. The Lord told him that no man could see His face and live. No doubt the time was not yet come for God to reveal Himself as He is. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of thee a great nation." And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Abisamach, of the tribe of Dan. Exodus 1 The Israelites Multiply in Egypt ( Genesis 46:727) 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. Even then, being still unable, he declined the task, declaring that the more he thought of God, the less was he able to describe Him.(2.) They promise obedience, but it is obedience of the law. Thus he is sanctified by the Spirit unto the obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus. But the same Moses returns to Jehovah with the confession "Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. This always abides; for the law is lawful if a man use it lawfully. It is for us, but it is only in Him before God. "And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always." The knowledge of Israel in the millennium will be genuine, for they shall be all taught of God. This was impossible yet. (2.) "Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, show me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thine." As people are arguing about God, God is faulted for the order of the extermination and not making covenants with these people. (Exodus 26:1-37) Christ is set forth in various ways by the curtains Christ in His human purity and righteousness Christ in what was heavenly Christ in His glory whether Jewish or extending over Gentiles also, with His judicial title asserted. The Christian has it also, and in a far better way. closely with the last section of the preceding chapter, and must be prayer. "And the God of the Old Testament, is a God of wrath, and judgment, but I love the God of the New Testament who is forgiving, and gracious and kind." before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation ( Exodus 34:1-7 ). Exodus 25:22, Numbers 7:89. They would place these in the fire and heat them until they became- until the iron became red hot. Nevertheless Moses persists in his plea with Jehovah, who does not fail to try him to the utmost by adopting the language of the people. And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair. In Exodus 31:1-18 we have all this closed with two facts the Spirit of God empowering man to make a tabernacle according to the pattern, and the Sabbath-day connected with the order of the tabernacle. 5 The Name of the Lord proclaimed. But at any rate His goodness is caused to pass before him, which in Exodus 34:1-35 he sees. me What a solemn but yet gracious manifestation is here made of God. Let this God be our God for ever and ever. Jehovah loves to surrender to Moses, as of old to Jacob with far feebler forces. They may prosper for the time, but a heavy retribution awaits them. They, with Aaron to help them, aimed a blow at the throne of God by making a golden calf. That will by no means clear the guilty. This inspires us with the confidence that right is the order of the universe. The Matthew Henry' Commentary comments on this by saying: "Thus Moses, like a man of a truly public spirit, intercedes even for the children that should be born. WebExodus 34:7. Is it not His grace shown in man, even in the man Christ Jesus? He immediately adds, "and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation." Grace and truth were demonstrated in Jesus Christ, but to those who reject that grace and truth, as Hebrews tells us, "There remains then a fearful looking for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God that will devour His adversaries. Thus Israel never was under absolute law. But they had no such thoughts of themselves, more than real knowledge of God. He ordered that there should be the Urim and the Thummim connected with the high priest's breastplate; that is the means of divine guidance for the people. As being a position, it may have so far a more external sound, but it is a real deliverance, which grace now confers on us in Christ Jesus, not merely the communication of a life which hates sin, but the putting one according to the new place of Christ Himself before God. However, we find that God was pleased to give subsequently and separately, but yet in connection with the ten words, certain ordinances which concerned Israel in their worship. 2. God is not the discovery of the unaided intellect. Deuteronomy 10:4_. Thanks be to God who gives us the victory by our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, according to the usual phrase of Scripture, the sacred name of God is applied to the visible symbol; not that the empty cloud was a figure of the absent Deity, but because it testified His presence according to the comprehension of men. The Spirit given to the Christian is of power, love, and a sound mind. All the previous What can be more lovely, more according to Christ, than this? This was the second proclamation. For the presence of God with his people Israel in the wilderness: "I pray thee, go among us, for thy presence is all in all to our safety and success." God in his grace would renew the covenant, and to this end he called Moses back up the mountain. But these are not the only things. Next (versesExodus 26:15-30; Exodus 26:15-30) follows the account of the acacia boards with their tenons and bolts, the sockets of silver and the rings of gold. Merciful, first because mans misery makes him first an object of pity (Judges 10:16; Isaiah 63:19). These verses, as Stock says, show that the revelation of God was not merely to the outward sight, but chiefly to the heart and mind of Moses. That's how high God prizes you. Exodus 29:5-6). They are made of iron; they are made of stone. And the Lord said unto Moses, Cut out two tables of stone, hew them out like the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke. It is not God who thus deals with humanity, of which Israel was the chosen specimen, and the one remembered before Him; but in the seven candlesticks, or rather the candelabrum with its seven lights, we clearly see the type of Christ as the power and giver of the Holy Ghost in testimony for God. What a place for us, and for us now! There was no such effect when it was merely the ten commandments or the ordinances connected with the people and the land; but after the communications of heavenly shadows and the mercy of God which intermixed itself with the law, Moses' face shines, and the people of Israel could not bear it. (Exodus 34:10) Moses had prayed Him as Adonai to "go among us; for it is a stiff-necked people; and pardon our sin, and take us for thine inheritance." With this, people have a great difficulty with God because of His orders to wipe them out, to exterminate them. Not a soul that has been since brought to the knowledge of God but what at least ought to have profited in point of fact, must have profited by this grave lesson. *Dr. Fairbairn views Christ's whole undertaking as symbolized already in the furniture and services of the Most Holy Place, and therefore considers the things belonging to the Holy Place as directly referring only to the works and services of His people. air above the mount, but came down to the top of it when God spake This denotes, [1.] He loved sin so well that God had to interdict it. Grace binds us with Christ as Aaron with his sons. (vs.1-28) Poor people! The more we see of God's goodness the more ashamed we should be of our own sins, and the more earnest for an interest in it. Exodus 30:1-38; Exodus 30:1-38 resumes the account, for a reason already explained, of the various vessels of the sanctuary which had to follow the priesthood, and pursue the truth meant by it, namely, the means of access to God. I would have problems with any god that couldn't work miracles. Where Christ is thus received in the Holy Ghost, a new kind of responsibility is created. The children of Israel saw the face of Moses, the skin of Moses' face it was shining: and Moses put the veil upon his face again, until he went to speak with the Lord ( Exodus 34:29-35 ). You know, that would be such a glorious thing if you had a religious nation. Amongst astronomers, remarks Hamilton, it is a favourite speculation that the sun himself is something else than a mere ball of fire, and that inside of his burning atmosphere there may be a mighty globe with cool meadows, seas of glass, rivers of crystal, and every conceivable provision for a vast and rejoicing populationthe possible home of even the just made perfect. It is in vain for any person to pretend that it was better to have the Urim and Thummim, for which one had to seek the priest from time to time when wanted, than to be indwelt always by One who knows all the truth. He will mingle so much of the penal in his dealings as to evince that his clemency is not to be presumed upon.. It is the application of the full power of the work of the Lord Jesus. A gorgeous canopy of cloudsglowing in every tint of gold, scarlet, and purple over the evening sky, alone remains to bear witness to the passing suns magnificence. It's a miracle that he could do it. That is the bearing of it all. Moses had not asked for a renewal of the tables. The Exodus is the central event of the Old We have reason gratefully to acknowledge God's goodness to us, not only in the real instances of it, but in the declarations he has made of it by his word; not only that he is, and will be, gracious to us, but that he is pleased to let us know it. THE COVENANT WORDS. This was the first full revelation, the last is like unto it. God is love, and they are enough for faith and hope and work Notice, 1. All the people then saw the thunderings and the lightnings, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, and stood afar off, asking that not God but Moses should speak with them. There is no other means of knowing the mind of God; the power for understanding is the Spirit of God; and the object in whose light alone it can be understood is Christ. This is all the more striking too, because even after the redemption of the people from Egypt there are grievous faults, unbelief, complaints, and murmurs; nevertheless, not a blow, not a single answer on God's part save in tender mercy towards a poor and failing people. This relative proclamation may be viewed as revealing Gods goodness and Gods justice. Because what he is doing is psychologically destroying that daughter of his.There are so many of the young girls who come in with tremendous problems of adjusting to life because of the stupidity of their dads. But practical sanctification there is, and amply insisted on elsewhere; but it is not the point here, and if we attempt to bring practical sanctification into this verse, we destroy the gospel of grace. By the law he died to the law that he might live to God. It is Christ put on us. Deuteronomy 10:4_. Moses, painfully aware of the Israelites weakness, appealed to the grace of God, asking that he would still dwell among them and own them as his people in spite of their stubbornness (34:1-9).God then renewed his covenant, promising Israel provision and protection. And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. I grant you this that, looked at as a whole, distressing failure was setting in just as it was here; yet as here the very failure isolated the truehearted, but isolated them not in want of love but in the strongest possible manifestation of divine charity and sense of God's glory. That is very true; it is impossible if you're only dealing with natural things. Both unite in Christ and His atoning death. No sooner had Moses got to the top of the mount than God gave him the meeting (Exodus 34:5; Exodus 34:5): The Lord descended, by some sensible token of his presence, and manifestation of his glory. 9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.
